Major project – Evaluation

In conclusion for the major project I have really enjoyed it and think the art and the process of the project has been my favourite out of all the projects this year. This project was the first project where we have had complete freedom of theme, planning and medium. At first the thought of coming up with everything on your own and writing your own SOI was quite scary. At first I really didn’t who where I wanted to go with this project and had no clue what theme I wanted. To try and get myself started I thought about what kind of art I like trying to get inspiration. I really like art with a strong sense of contrast and balance in it and thought that would be a great starting place.

I wanted to get stuck into the project so done a lot of teaser games at the beginning. I research contrast in art and the history of balance and optima which I found really interesting. I got really into the research and done lots of note, so I then had to try and put my research into my art. I started out by making little collages with contrast and balance to start off. I then started doing highly complex geometric designs looking and balance and contrast though shape and colour. I really liked these designs and got really into them.

After the first half of the eight week project we had a mid process crit, this crit was really helpful and was really positive. The feedback I got from my crit was to to take a step back from these designs and try and develop my theme in a different style. I found the crit really useful on where to go next and it gave me a little boost knowing I was on track with my work.

I then wanted to take a different approach in my work. Some of the feedback I got from my crit was to maybe work in 3D. I’m not really comfortable using or thinking 3D and didn’t want my work to look bad so I had to think how I could add a 3D element in my work. I then started to do some research in 3D balance which is when I came across rock balancing. I took a lot of inspiration from from this and helped my come to my final design.

I then started to create some 2D paintings of shapes piled on top of each other working in a grey tone. The painting is flat however through composition and placement it almost creates the illusion on 3D balancing.

To conclude this project I am really proud of my work and think my paintings are attractive and visually interesting. I think I managed my time really well for this project and spent the right amount of time on research, development and working on my final designs. I really liked the freedom of this project and think my work is probably the most finished out of all my projects
