Robert Motherwell, connecting with your unconscious

Robert Motherwell was born in 1915 and died in 1991, He was an American abstract painter  and was one of the youngest member of the “New York school”  which was a group of American poets, painters, dancers and musicians in the 50s-60s in new York city. Motherwell studied philosophy however went on to study art and is known to be one of the most influential expressionist painters in history. Between 1932 and 1937 Motherwell studied art at the California school of arts. It was there were he was introduced to modernism and symbolist was a nine century art movement in france and Russian which was mainly poetry. The inspiration from the symbolism was a theme he carried through out a lot of his later work. 

Motherwell was greatly inspired by the surrealist movement. It was then when he was introduced to the concept of “automatic” or automatism drawing which was a technique which surrealist artist used to connect into their unconscious. Learning about the automatic concept changed motherwell and his art making it more abstract which led to him being one of the most important expressionist painters through is interesting techniques and beliefs created some beautiful contrasting paintings.
