Yin Yang, complementing contrast

The Ying Yang and the symbol comes from ancient Chinese history and can be see in written work from as far back as 1400-1100 BCE. The oldest record of the Yin Hang can be seen in the book of changes by King Wen in the 9th century. The origin of Yin Yang comes from the Chinese time keeping system measuring the shadows over the year. The Yang begins in Winter and shows when the daylight comes over the darkness( the sun) The Ying begins in summer and shows when the darkness takes over the light (the moon) The zing and yang are connected with the cycle of the world, sun and moon with the results of the four seasons. It represents the concept of Dualism which is the meaningful division of two opposites or contrasting parts. The Ying Yang symbolises the two half of things and how even though these things are opposites they are in harmony. The Ying and Yang represent two half’s, these include:
  • Life and death
  • good and evil
  • The sun and moon
  • hot and cold
  • Male and Female
  • Heaven and earth
  • Positive and negative
  • Black and white
What is the yin? The yin is the black area in the symbol is represents;
  • Female
  • Moon
  • Dark
  • Cold
  • Creative
  • Soft
  • Still
What is the Yang? The Yang is the white area of the symbol which represents;
  • Male
  • Sun
  • Bright
  • hot
  • Logical
  • Hard
  • Movement
The symbol symbolises how there is always two side and one side can not exist with out the other. There is always dark in the light and there is always light in the dark. The balance is very important. Even though the two sides are in contrast they have balance and harmony. Each side is equal to the other. No one is greater. The balance is key as the two equal opposites create the whole.

The symbol

In the symbol the two sides represent the two yin and yang. The black and white side show the two contrasting forces. The two small black and white circles show that nothing is complete. There is always a small part of the opposite force with in for example there is always a small bit of evil in the good and vice versa. The is like shape which divides the black and white side. Instead of using a harsh dramatic line to divide the two side a smooth round s shape is used. The two side press up against each other showing there interlocked and how they are dependent on one another.
