Sculpture – development with cubes

I wanted to explore a different direction in my sculpture. I think I got a bit stuck to the idea of your brain forgetting and blacks. I didn’t want to limit my selves so started looking into memories fading away. I took inspiration from Cornelia Parker and how she creates the effect of an explosion frozen in time. I wanted the cubes to be positioned in a way which make you question how are they connected? I wanted to symbolise how your memories over time start to fade away and fall apart. I chose to create 18 small paper cubes and stick them in a group and have some coming out to create the effect of them falling apart.

I am happy with the way the sculpture looks as I think its really interest and bold. If I had More time or handled the time I had better, I think I would have made the cubes on a much bigger scale I want them to be big and in your face with the strong geometric feel. I wish I also thought more about the presentation and maybe conceded using small lights or a small plinth.

I also started playing around with shadow, I held up the sculpture against a single cube as I thought the shadows projecting were interesting. The shadows almost symbolise how memories leave an effect on you and you can look at it from all different angles and you will maybe see the event in a different way. I wanted to show memories leave a trace even if you forget them.
