Sculpture- memories, experimenting using use wire

I wanted to try and turn a memory into a physical object, however wasn’t sure how to go bout that. I thought I could take a science turn to y work and look into what a memories looks like inside your brain. Through my research I was looking into how your brain forgets bad memories linking to trauma and PTSD. You blank out those bad event and are left with black outs. I started by using wire to create these memory things and jointing them all together like arms. I used wire as I thought it would allowing me bend the shapes easily and play around with the way it looks. I used a polysteren plinth to hold the wire down so it is easier to work with.

I wanted to make the wire thicker and have more stability so I decided to use paper Mache. I was scared the sculpture would start looking like a primary school project but think I was just over thinking it. I started by thickening the joints as I wanted that to be the thickest part it the arms branching out too each other.

I then started to thicken the whole thing so there would be an even coverage all over. I done about four or five layers of paper Mache leaving it to dry each time. Once the sculpture was done I painted the whole thing white with poster paint so it would all be one colour. I then wondered how I w going to show the memory black out in my sculpture and thought people wouldn’t get it. I then decided to paint area of the sculpture black to symbolise those black outs which I think really woks well

I am quite pleased with my final outcome and think it represents what I wanted to share. I think if I organised my time a bit better and didn’t second guess myself the sculpture r could have been much bigger which I think would have been really successful an visually interesting. I would also also maybe played around with lighting so the shadows of the sculture would be projected around it.
