Bob and Roberta smith, Art matters

Patrick Brill who was born in 1963 is the man behind “bob and Roberta smith” Brill is a contemporary artist, writer, musician and author. He is known for his use of text and brightly coloured slogans often based around art.

Brill is known as Bob and Roberta smith within his art career. The name comes from when he worked along side his sister Roberta. Brills art is brightly coloured text painted on banners and old pieces of wood. Brill uses text to create humour in themes such as politics and modern culture.

Brill launched the Art Party with Crescent Arts in 2013. The Parts aim is to seep up for the arts and give them a political voice towards the government. The party is not a formal political group and isn’t un by anyone high up and run by artists and organisations. The group was formed as the government doesn’t see art and design important in schools and is often discriminated. The artists what to make a voice for themselves and the artist community that art is important!

I find Bob and Roberta smiths artwork really interesting. It’s a completely different type of art which you see daily. I love how devoted Brill is so passionate about standing up for the arts and showing that art does make a difference in history and is a way for so many people to express themselves and what going on around us. In the pieces of art, I love how the use bold text is in bright colours and a crazy mixtures of sizes and fonts. I think this adds a sense of youth to the pieces as it is childish and fun which catches your eye. Even though the banners seem happy at first because of the colour there are actually quite serious tackling a big issue. The contrast between the childish aspect of the art and the seriousness of the meaning links to the facts that a lot of people believe art is just for kids and isn’t as important as science or maths. I really like Bob and Roberta’s work and think I would love to explore working with just text in the future as I think it’s really interesting visually and conceptually.
