The “Day today” brief was the first project we were assigned. The first week we had to produce five piece of art taking inspiration from a chosen news article. We had to choose a different article each day and try not being too literal and rather to focus on a certain theme or issue the article pursues. The brief was to show a lot of development of your ideas using a wide range of material. The second week of the brief we had to develop one of your days from week one that you enjoyed the most or think was most successful.
I think I developed the key themes of contrast and division quite well in the second week. I really wanted the themes to show so I experiment with a range of compositions and ways to lay out the shapes. I gave myself a good amount of time to develop the compositions and think it was very important to explore a selection of layouts and see what works best. Looking back on my work from the second week I could have developed my work physically and symbolically. I should have given myself a day to really explore using sculpture as I had plenty of time and got to comfortable using paints and think using different materials like wood or clay would have taken my work to a next level really highlighting the key themes. I think my outcome is bold and visually interesting. The different textures created by the palettes knives creates feeling of organised chaos which I think works well. I am happy with my final piece and think even though it is quite simple it has powerful message. Looking back on my final piece I think it may be quite hard to read, I think Its easy for me to see the themes behind it but I can understaff on how many people won’t fully get it and think that’s something in the future I need to focus on.
The feedback from my crit was overall quite positive, my class thought my work was visually intriguing with the bold use of colour and textures. My class thought I could have developed using different materials as it was all very 2D and thought it would help push my work further. Although the feedback was positive there was some confusion about the themes, I was trying to convey. I understood that people didn’t really get my work until I explained my ideas which showed me that I do need to focus more on the overall message of my work perhaps more than the aesthetic as I want people to feel the themes and issues within my work. My class commented on the religious elements in my work which I hadn’t thought about which was interesting and perhaps I could develop that further. They also mentioned the technological element i my work which I shows that people got different things from my work which I find really intriguing.
