Daytoday 5 – Forecast

Day five, for the final day of “the day today” brief i chose an article from The Scotsman to take inspiration from. The article is about the “return of the beast from the East” and how the weather in Scotland is about to hit a sudden change in the next couple of months resulting in the coldest winter Scotland has seen since 30 years. Scientists are saying it’s the return of the beats from the east which we experienced in April/March 2018 when extremely heavy snow fell upon areas around Scotland. Scientist have tried to predict the longest weather forecasting, predicting the weather for January and February 2020.The have found it to be extremely cold with the lowest temperatures since 2013. In refection to the article I wanted to show a lot of movement in my work, I chose to work with paint and a palette knife for my pieces as I thought it would allow me to be looser and freer. I experimented using the folding technique you often do when you are younger only painting one side of the page and folding it over to achieve interesting shapes and patterns. I think by doing the technique you can create some interesting pieces as it’s all about the shapes. With in the folded art there is a lot of movement from the continuous flowy lines which guide eyes. I chose to only work with three colours, a dark blue, white and metallic light blue. I wanted to keep the colours cold to symbolise winter and rain/snow. I also didn’t want to use a lot of colour as I wanted the focus to be on the mark making and line and not be distracted by lots f colours. I tried using the palette knife in different ways and found by dragging it lightly or which a lot of pressure or dabbing it I could achieve some really interest textures, so the pieces aren’t just visually pleasing g but also physically. I wanted to add another element to the painting, I chose to explore the use of college using newspaper and denim from an old pair of jeans. I chose to rip the newspaper in small pieces, so I wanted to add a little bit of contrast and roughness to the pieces. This links to the chaotic weather we are about to experience and how its all going to come crashing down. I experimented cutting the fabric to almost look like waves as I wanted to symbolise the water and how the good weather is over and from now on the rain will be pouring. In conclusion the final day of this brief has been my favourite, I really enjoyed producing theses paintings and am happy with how they look. I think they are visually interesting with the different shapes and patterns but also physically with the different materials used. I enjoyed just the movement of the whole process and would love to develop the theme more. Ultimately, I have enjoyed “the day today” brief for the past five days. At times I found it very challenging, to brainstorm a different idea every day and try and make each day good and interesting is very hard. Also, the fact that finding a good article isn’t easy, let’s just say I won’t be reading newspapers for a while. Even though I found it hard I did really enjoy it, it got me thinking and pushed myself. time-19:16 https://www.scotsman.com/news/people/beast-from-the-east-set-to-return-to-scotland-1-4999798
