Daytoday 4 – Detour

Day four, for the fourth day of “the day today” brief I chose and article from the Edinburgh evening news to look at. The article is about the filming of the new fast and furious movie in the City of Edinburgh. The filming has caused more than 50 roads to be closed and dozens being diverted. Many people are not happy with the recent start to the filming as it is causing people to travel long distances to get to work and having to take alternate routes. The festival has recently finished, and many people are glad that they can get back to normal however not anymore. The people of Edinburgh are calling it a “lack of communication” as the residence and shop owners were not spoken to prior to the filming and didn’t ask for approval. I found this article hard to take inspiration from. I didn’t want to be too literal and draw cars or roads but i wasn’t too sure what else to take from the report. I decided to focus on speed, I thought I would process a few quick paintings only pending a couple of minutes on each. I chose to use a very limited colour palette of yellow, green, blue and white. I wanted the picture to be more about the bold brushstrokes and shape than the colours. I played around with long and short brush strokes as I found that kind of symbolised the roads but also just created an impasto look to the painting making them more visually interesting. I chose the add squares to the painting changing between vertical and horizontal lines. The square creates a contrast within the picture as there is a mixture of sharp edges and straight lines. This links to the article as it shows the mixture of opinions people have about the shooting and however consent was asked so there is a strong backflash creating a strong tension. I wanted to make the piece quite busy. There isn’t a lot of white space and shapes and lines have been layered. Is links to the article as with all that’s going n the City centre is buzzier than usual, there is a lot of chaos and confusion. My over all conclusion to this day is I’m not too happy with the way it went. I think I could have developed the idea more and could have tried something else like sculpture. I think the painting are okay, but the colours got a bit muddy and doesn’t look that effective. If I could go back, I would maybe try using some college and maybe focus on the theme “lack of communication” as I think the theme could go quite far and I could create so interesting pieces from it. time-17:40 https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/whats-on/edinburgh-film-chief-defends-torturous-fast-and-furious-road-closure-call-1-4997238
