Daytoday 2 – Division
Day two, for my second piece of art I chose another article from the Scotsman to take inspiration from. The article is about how many schools around Scotland have introduced same sex toilets, showers and changing rooms. Although this was done to make everyone feel equal, having gender neutral toilets could be breaking the law. Schools could be faced with legal lawsuits if there isn’t a single sex facility. In my opinion i don’t believe same sex toilets are a good idea in school. Coming from a female’s point of view I don’t believe young girls/teens shouldn’t share bathrooms with the boys. It’s not just about the safety side of it but also at that age your going through a time that can be embarrassing and is quite private. Me personally if I was a young teen girl at one of those schools, I would feel very uncomfortable sharing a bathroom let alone getting changed with the boys. I think having a third toilet opinion is the better way of doing it so if anyone would prefer to use the gender-neutral toilet, they can however keep the same sex toilets too.
In reflection to the article I wanted to show a lot of division and opposite in my work. I chose to use a very limited selection of shapes only focusing on circles and rectangles. I wanted to symbolise the man and women using shape. I chose to work with only two shapes to also symbolise how closed-minded people are and how restricted they are when thinking about others and how their actions effect people. I wanted the two shapes to clash, the circle is rounded and smooth whereas the rectangle is sharp and linear. The shapes create a strong contrast next to each other. I really like the way the shapes fight against each other; it links to the article as the two side of the argument strongly disagree and how their opinions clash. I wanted the colour scheme to be bold and eye catching in my work, I chose to only use red, white and black. The drawings are almost monochromatic with the harsh burst of red which really stands out but also helps the shapes pop.
I wanted to trying experiment going 3D with my ideas, I wanted to carry of focusing on shape and shadow working with white paper. I cut out hemispheres and interlocked them with one another to creates some interesting pieces. The models have the contrasting use of curved and sharp edges which I really like and think helps tell the story.
